Pure tone audiometry (PTA) is the most common hearing test used to determine an individual's hearing threshold levels, allowing the degree, kind, and configuration of a hearing loss to be determined, and therefore giving a foundation for diagnosis and therapy. Because it relies on patient reactions to pure tone stimuli, PTA is a subjective, behavioral evaluation of a hearing threshold. As a result, PTA is only used on adults and children who are old enough to comply during the test. An audiologist can assess the hearing of extremely young toddlers and preschoolers using conditioned play audiometry (CPA) or simply play audiometry.
